I Really Liked Snowly Theme, So I Forked It

, Gal Tashma

First of all, I wanted to announce that I am moving from bitterb.it and from now on this site will be hosted on galtashma.com Intro I really liked the Snowly theme and was thinking of using it for my personal blog. I liked its simple look and feel but I was missing my own touch. Furthermore, I felt that i was missing two important features: Home page did not contain recent blog posts There was no page to show my work All that lead me to forking the theme an making it my own. By the way, apparently my modifications...

Droidcon Tel Aviv

, Gal Tashma

This is the second year Droidcon has taken place in Israel, this year I had gotten the opportunity to take part in this cool event. Two things that interested me the most were hearing interesting stories and tips and learning about new awesome tools. Interesting stories and tips One of the biggest trends in this Droidcon was automation and testing. I think the Android developers realised that even with basically an unlimited number of different devices, there are ways to promise your product is on par with a certain standard. When compared to the web, there is still plenty of...

My First Hackathon

, Gal Tashma

Last week I participated in my first hackthon. The hackthon took place in Tel Aviv and targeted young technological minded people. Each project had to follow three Criteria’s: - The project addresses a real social need - The project is not a one-off and is capable of surviving - The project does not end with the presentation, make a demo Our Idea Most of the teams choose to focus on helping people in need (blind, handicapped, etc..), we chose to take a different approach to helping society. As we see it, one of the main bottlenecks of todays society is...

The Husky Code

, Gal Tashma

The Husky I have been working a bit with javascript lately, over time I learned to like its hackish nature. One day I had an idea, ascii pictures are cool but what if I make an ascii picture out of code? Naturally I chose to try it out on a picture of a husky. After a few days I got my brother to participate too. That day we worked straight into the night not sleeping a minute, all for the sake of making our Javascript-ASCII code print itself while looking like a Husky. Not to mention that all along we...

Smooth Android View Pager

, Gal Tashma

Smooth ViewPager While working with the android ViewPager I noticed that scrolling through pages within the code (not by touch) is not smooth and is too fast. I wanted my ViewPager to scroll smoothly. No answer on the web could fix the problem entirely so i decided to try and fix it myself. To fix this problem I wrote the SmoothViewPager. It uses reflection to change the behavior of the default ViewPager. While looking for a solution for the problem I stumbled upon JazzyViewPager by jfeinstein10. JazzyViewPager adds some cool animations to the classic ViewPager, I realy recommend using it!...

Yet Another Blog Setup Post

, Gal Tashma

As you have seen, the blog has changed a bit. Until now I have been using Postach.io as my blogging platform. Recently they announced that there will be no free plan, so I had 14 days to find an alternative. I now use anchorcms with a great theme made by Piotr Filipek Postach.io postachio is a simple blogging platform that enabled having a blog without owning a server. The idea was that the writer would use evernote for the writing and they would pull the “marked” notes and display them in the blog, and the best part, it was free...

I didn’t need to worry about doing homework or getting a good grade, I took the opportunity and each day I did only what I really wanted to. I went to an Avicii show :O :P had fun with friends and worked only on projects I felt like working on. One fun thing I worked on was a new design for my website, I made it only for fun and learned a lot about design in the process. hopefully i will manage...

Working With JSON

, Gal Tashma

JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) is a text based protocol. It is used primarly to transfer data between server and web applications, it is similar to xml and yaml. Json is a language independent format and can be used in a large verity of programing languages. In this post i will show how to use it with php and java. Json Example: { "author":"H.H. Munro", "id":"81a55c164d3caa5ac2773706f94fd7ea", "text":"I hate babies. They're so human." } JSON in Java Using Json in java is really simple, there are a lot of libraries to convert objects to json. One of my favourite libraries is google’s...

Hangman Update Published

, Gal Tashma

Hangman Update Published Just a few days ago I published the new version of Hangman. One of the main features was Google play game services which worked out to be a very powerful platform and very easy to implement. Even though the users like the new features ,most of them don’t share their scores with the public (may be they are afraid of Google violating their privacy). Ultimately I am very pleased with this new update. Cool Projects Have you ever heard of LIFX? LIFX is an Australian startup the have re invented the light bulb ;). Their bulb uses...

Working With Strings and Bytes in Java

, Gal Tashma

Converting byte arrays to strings is a tricky thing. I found a great example by mykong that explains exactly what works and what doesn’t. I have edited the source. public class TestByte { public static void main(String[] args) { String example = "This is an example"; byte[] bytes = example.getBytes(); //Print the text and then text in byte format System.out.println("Text : " + example); System.out.println("Text Byte" + bytes); //This will return you something like: ClassName@hashcode String s1 = bytes.toString(); System.out.println("Text : " + s1); //This is how you convert byte[] to string String s2 = new String(bytes); System.out.println("Text Decrypted :...
